Wimborne community unites to help blind man be more independent

A FUNDRAISER has been launched to help a “fiercely independent” blind man in Wimborne get his spark back.

Patrick Smyth, who also has connections to Shaftesbury, is a well-known figure around Wimborne as he is easily recognisable by his guide dog, Yogi, when out running errands.

Patrick’s family said he has had a tough time due to a breakdown of his marriage, the loss of his home and workshop, as well as dealing with health struggles and the loss of “much needed” neighbourhood support

His family has now launched a fundraiser to create a more secure and rewarding life for him and his dogs.

The Wimborne community has responded in force, with nearly £2,000 raised in just over a week.

Money raised will go towards funding an allocated personal assistant to help with day-to-day tasks as well as a ‘man shed’ which would help Patrick to keep creating woodwork wonders.

His sister, Alison Short, who created the fundraiser, said: “Patrick is undoubtedly a strong and fiercely independent person in every way possible.

“However, it’s essential to recognise and understand when support is necessary—particularly when it comes to one’s medical, physical, and mental well-being.”

She added: “Life has become overwhelming [for him], to say the least, and we are doing everything we can to help him regain some independence and comfort whilst also ensuring he is healthy and positive.

“Although we are doing everything we can, there comes a point where financial constraints limit our ability to provide the necessary support, making it incredibly challenging.

“As a family, we’ve been brainstorming ways to support Patrick through these challenges and ensure that he can continue to live as independently as possible.

“While the past year has dimmed his spark, we firmly believe that with the support of his community and loved ones, Patrick’s passion for life can be reignited.

“Our goal is to raise funds that will allow us to create a more secure and rewarding life for Patrick and his vital dogs.”

Money raised will support Patrick until he can claim a pension in three years time.

Alison added: “We are incredibly grateful for any form of support, whether it’s a donation or simply sharing this campaign with others.

“Patrick is a beloved part of the Wimborne community, and we know that with the help of those who care about him, we can bring back his spark and make life a little easier for him and his four-legged companions.”
