WIMBORNE u3a is encouraging more people to sign up to the group as it launches its new programmes of events next month.
There’s something for everyone at the Wimborne u3a – with around 60 dynamic groups offering a range of different activities, from philosophy to poetry, sports including tai chi and table tennis, bridge to ballroom dancing, plus a host of walking activities.
A year’s membership costs £60 and will allow people to sign up for as many classes as they would like, subject to availability.
Wimborne u3a is a thriving hub for lifelong learning, social engagement, and community spirit.
Chairperson of Wimborne u3a Ashley Rowlands is encouraging people to not be put off by the university in its title.
He said: “All our activities are for enjoyment: there are no exams! U3a is an excellent and affordable way of following new interests and making new friends.”

He added: “More than just an educational initiative, Wimborne u3a plays a vital role in supporting individuals who may feel socially isolated, fostering connections and friendships within the local community.
As an independent charity under the umbrella of the Third Age Trust, Wimborne u3a has been running since 2002 and offers a wide range of learning and leisure activities for those no longer in full-time employment.
One Wimborne u3a tennis table member said: “I’m 74 and there aren’t so many places where you can play for so little cost.
“I went along after a hip replacement to build up my strength and coordination, and it’s done me proud.
“It’s a great bunch of people and we occasionally meet socially outside the table tennis.”
Ashley Rowlands added: “Our ethos is Learn, Laugh, and Live – and we believe you’re never too old for that! You may be new to the area, perhaps no longer bringing up a family, newly retired or semi-retired and looking for a hobby. As the population in Wimborne grows, we’re keen to reach out to the new residents and newcomers in our town.”
Enrolment officially opens on July 7, with the programme and online application form available via www.wimborneu3a.org.uk.
