XR Wimborne demonstrating in town during COP28 in UAE

EXTINCTION Rebellion will be out in Wimborne this week to mark the global COP28 event, taking place in the UAE.

XR Wimborne is marking the UN climate change conference by reading aloud the words of people in the Global South.

“We want to highlight that the climate catastrophe is already happening in many countries with many lives and livelihoods lost, for example, destructive cyclones in the Solomon Islands, mudslides in Uganda, floods in Nepal, droughts in Rwanda and threats to food security in Sierra Leone,” said Gena Herring, from XR Wimborne.

The group is also handing out leaflets and talking to the public.

“It’s time for the world to commit to a just and rapid transition to renewables,” fellow group member, Joanna Bury, added.

“New oil and gas projects don’t fit with that at all. Instead we should be ramping up our renewables and moving away from fossil fuels.”

The action is the latest demonstration by XR Wimborne, who have previously joined arts fans to protest over new gas and oil licences, as well as joining a regional demonstration in Bath.
