Wimborne groups unite to help residents act for a greener future

PLANET Wimborne and u3a Wimborne have joined forces to launch a new programme of environmental learning aimed at helping residents turn small actions into meaningful change.

The five-session series, Greener Wimborne, Better Planet, combines u3a’s focus on lifelong learning with Planet Wimborne’s leadership in community environmental action.

Each standalone session lasts between two and three hours and blends expert insight with hands-on exploration.

Sessions will be held at The Reef in Colehill Lane, Colehill, unless otherwise stated.

The programme is free to u3a members and £10 for non-members, making it an accessible way for the wider community to explore local environmental issues.

The series begins on April 20 with What is Planet Wimborne? an introduction to the group’s mission, environmental awards and network of green community organisations.

The session will also look at how the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals shape its work locally.

On May 11, Let’s Talk Rubbish will feature Wimborne War on Waste and Win on Waste, focusing on the waste hierarchy and where individuals and communities can make the biggest difference, alongside practical everyday tips.

Wildlife Friendly Gardening follows on May 18, led by Wilding Wimborne, exploring the UK’s wildlife decline and simple steps gardeners can take to help. A visit to Wimborne Community Garden may be included.

On June 1, Arts and the Environment will examine how creativity can inspire environmental awareness during Wimborne’s Town of Culture year, with contributions from Wimborne Contemporary Arts and Wimborne Community Theatre.

The series concludes on June 15 with Walk on the Wild Side, a guided walk at Badbury Rings exploring chalk downland habitats.

u3a Wimborne chair Ashley Rowlands said: “We welcome this collaboration with Planet Wimborne. Greener Wimborne, Better Planet is about bringing people together to learn, explore and take positive action.

“Whether you’re passionate about wildlife, curious about waste reduction, or inspired by the arts, there’s something here for everyone in this community collaboration for a greener future.”
