Wimborne dog rescue charity in Christmas appeal as demand surges

A WIMBORNE dog rescue is appealing for support this Christmas as demand for help skyrockets.

The cost-of-living crisis, the pandemic and the adding of XL Bullies to the dangerous dogs list are just some of the reasons behind a surge in demand for support from Waggy Tails Rescue.

“This year has been particularly difficult for all rescues, struggling to cope with the increasing demand for rehoming places,” a spokesperson said.

“We are still dealing with the effects of the pandemic, compounded by the cost of living crisis and now the XL bullies being added to the Dangerous Dogs list.

“This is alongside all the usual reasons for rehoming that present themselves.”

The rescue is currently at capacity, but the calls keep coming.

“These are coming from further afield all the time as people find that rescues are full,” the spokesperson went on.

“Emergencies from social services and the police often pose a problem as they can be open ended from a few days to weeks, depending on the individual circumstances.”

Meanwhile, tough economic conditions mean donations have fallen as people struggle to make ends meet.

“Cash donations have dropped and fundraising activities such as street collections are no more,” the spokesperson added.

“So few people carry cash these days that even a collecting bucket at an event is depleted.”

Vaccinations for admitted dogs cost £60, neutering £140 and flea and worming treatment up to £20, so every little helps the rescue cover those essentials.

“With so many mouths to feed at the moment, we are putting out a Christmas wish list for good quality dry food, tins of Chappie, Dentastix and soft treats.”

Anyone able to give something to help this Christmas can drop gifts at the Sanctuary, at 143 Magna Road, Wimborne, or call the office on 01202 875000 for advice on how to make a cash donation.
