Teams ready for take off at Dorset Plane Pull

WHILE most of us are trying to use our bank holiday day off to relax, dozens of people will be exerting themselves for charity – pulling an aircraft!

The 2023 Dorset Plane Pull is set to take off at Bournemouth Airport from 10am on Monday (August 28), challenging teams of 20 to pull a 35,000kg aircraft a distance of 50 meters.

It’s all in a good cause, with 17 teams from across the county raising money for a raft of charities.

“Conditions for charity fundraising post pandemic no-doubt remain turbulent but we are delighted to be welcoming over 300 eager participants to take part in this unique challenge,” said Richard Griffin, founder and operations manager at the event.

Since its inception in 2009, the plane pull has raised more than £285,000 for charities ranging from large national organisations such as the Motor Neurone Disease Association, Dreamflight and the Jon Egging Trust to locally-based organisations such as the Dorset Children’s Foundation, Julia’s House, John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation, The Isabel Baker Foundation, Amelia’s Rainbow and more.

Trophies will be awarded to the team with the best fancy dress, best team name and the fastest pull time, with the 2022 winning time of 30.10 seconds going to Team Dreamflight.

National and local businesses have committed to support the day with the Boeing 737 being provided by county firm, European Aviation.

“The day provides fun for not just those taking part but also supporters,” a spokesperson said.

“Entertainment, food, drinks and charity stalls are all on site to keep all amused and entry to the site is free.

“Activities for younger visitors includes shows by a variety of entertainers, face-painting and inflatable fun.”

Anyone wanting to jet in for the action can plot a flight path to European Aviation, Aviation Business Park, Bournemouth Airport.
