School Council gives Wimborne young people a voice

YOUNG people are having their say over town matters in Wimborne.

Wimborne Minster Town Council has created the School Council, an initiative designed to give young people in the town an active voice.

The School Council, which meets regularly, sees young people from schools in the area discuss issues that matter to them, their peers, and the broader community.

At this term’s meeting, the young councillors engaged in lively discussion and debate on topics of importance to Wimborne’s youth, including concerns about road safety, the types of shops and services young people would like to see in Wimborne, and the possibility of establishing a Youth Club.

Cllr Jeff Hart, Mayor of Wimborne Minster, said: “Wimborne Town Council is very fortunate to have our own School Council. These young people have taken on the important role of ‘Making Wimborne a better place to live’ and they are putting forward great ideas to the Full Council.

“They listen attentively to each other and vote on motions just as the adult councillors do.”

The School Council provides a forum where young people can directly influence the future of their town, he said, making it more responsive to the needs of its younger residents.

“We congratulate the members of the School Council for helping shape the future of Wimborne,” he added.
