Sadness an independent shop – which has traded for more than 100 years – to close

AN independent hardware shop that has stood the test of time in Christchurch is set to close its doors to customers next month.

Owners of Castles Home Hardware, at 38 to 44 Bargates, said the decision came about as it has become increasingly difficult for them to stay afloat – something they say is all too common for small businesses such as theirs.

“Despite our best efforts and your incredible support, we have reached a point where the only path forward is to say goodbye,” Gary Adams from Castles Home Hardware said.

The traditional ironmongers/hardware store opened in 1922 and has proudly served Christchurch for 103 years.

Gary thanked every customer who walked through the doors in that time, adding that their loyalty and kindness has meant more to them then they can express.

We must also mention our loyal and dedicated staff who have been with the business for decades and have been the face of Castles Home Hardware,” he said.

Without their support and hard work, Castles would not have continued with the reputation it has built over its long history.

Though this chapter is ending, the memories and community we’ve built together will stay with us. Thank you for being part of our journey.

As for Castles Developments – we will continue to trade and support the local area with its home maintenance services.

The shop is now offering a 15% discount before it closes it doors – with more deals to come.

Shoppers expressed their sadness at the announcement, with many sharing memories of visiting with their families.

One person said: “That’s very sad, Castle’s is as much part of the fabric of Christchurch as the castle or the quay.”

Another said: “This is such sad news, I’m 80 years old, old born in Mudeford. You have been there all of my life. Castles you will be greatly missed.”

Very sorry ton hear about Castles closing – we’ve used them several times since moving here 30 years ago & always had excellent service. Where are the good local Hardware stores now, apart from any Big concerns?
