AN EXHIBITION showcasing Wimborne from the Civil War all the way to the Monmouth Rebellion is being extended due to its popularity.
The exhibition, now extended until November 2, tells the story of Wimborne from the Civil War, through the Restoration and finally the Monmouth Rebellion, ably portrayed by the town’s own Wimborne Militia, who have generously contributed to the exhibition along with artefacts from the English Civil War Society who brought the thrilling Battle of Wimborne to life in the town earlier this year.
A spokesperson for Museum of East Dorset said: “Brace yourselves for intrigue and conflict as this thought-provoking exhibit delves into two pivotal national struggles that profoundly impacted Dorset: The English Civil War of the 1640s and the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685.
“Imagine the year is 1642. Parliament has clashed with the Crown, plunging the nation into civil war.
“Do you side with the Roundheads, champions of Parliament? Or do you cast your lot with the Cavaliers, loyal to King Charles I? The answer wasn’t straightforward.”
Rob Gray, Museum of East Dorset’s collections and exhibition manager said: “Rebellion and Revolt isn’t just about battles and bloodshed.
“It’s about the agonising choices that ordinary Dorset residents faced during these turbulent times.
“Religious beliefs, political allegiances, and even family ties could pull you in opposing directions.
“This exhibition challenges visitors to consider the moral complexities of these conflicts and the potentially fatal consequences of picking the wrong side.”
Visit the exhibition up until 2nd November. Free admission with normal museum entry.
