Plans to turn former NatWest building in Poole into space for three shops withdrawn

A SCHEME to remodel a former bank in Poole to make way for three shops has been withdrawn by the applicant.

The former NatWest building on Ashley Road would have had a new lease of life under proposals, with the building split into three units to provide space for three shops/offices “at a more affordable rental value”.

The applicant said the building had been advertised for six months, but as no tenant had come forward the plans to split it into three units were submitted as a way to encourage more retailers to register their interest as the rent would be split.

The plans were withdrawn on Tuesday (November 5).

Commenting on the plans, one resident questioned whether the building would better suit additional housing.

“I wonder if the area really needs more small shops, Ashley Road has many empty shops, and three extra low floor area shops are not really going to help this,” said the resident.

“What the area needs is an increase in affordable housing, this site was, I thought, destined for this, but now it seems the local area plan to provide sufficient housing is being bypassed for a short term idea of yet more empty shops.”

Another resident was concerned with what businesses would operate of the proposed units.

“We have a problem with too many retail spots that do not make positive contributions to
our community,” the comment read.

“Too many vape/junk food shops, nail bars and barbers. We really don’t need any more.

“We also have plenty of already empty units too, so what use is creating more? If the offering was something different (community facility?) then it’s worth consideration.”
