It doesn’t get better than this pair

by Lorraine Gibson
The on-stage chemistry between Maggie Bell and Dave Kelly, renewing their partnership after a two-year lay-off, is unmistakable.
Stemming from their love and respect for the music they play and their deep knowledge of the genres, their stage craft is what you’d expect from two pros with more than a combined 100 years tucked under their belts.
This, though, is no slick, sanitised show wheeled out with cynical predictability.
Although both originally come out of the blues/soul explosion of the late 1960s, the pair’s repertoire is far broader than that.
When they first got together in 2007 their aim was to sing any song that took their fancy, so that’s what they do in a set that includes folk, rock, country, gospel as well as blues and soul, natch.

When Bell (founder member of Stone The Crows) and Kelly (who’s recorded with Son House, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells to name but five) take to the stage anything can – and often does – happen.
One promoter said: “I don’t know how they make such a sound with one guitar and two voices – it sounds like a full band.”
