AN effort to get people walking by a Ferndown man has raised vital cash for two charities close to his heart.
Determined to help people get out and about and improve their mental health, Eric Cole, who lives at the Kings Park Care Home, started his own campaign.
Eric’s Epic Walk, held in the summer, aimed to get people walking, skipping and dancing a mile to raise money for Julia’s House Hospice and Lewis Manning, as well as boosting the health and fitness of participants.
His effort was such a success, it saw children at Ferndown First School take part, cheered on by Eric and staff at Kings Park.
Now, with sponsorship money collected and counted, Eric and the care home team have handed over a total of £1,003.56 to the causes.
Recently, Ruth Wright from Lewis Manning and Amanda Gillett from Julia’s House visited Kings Park where they congratulated Eric and received their donations. Also joining them was one of Eric’s biggest supporters, Krissy Stamp, mayor of Ferndown.

Home services advisor at the Church Road care home, Rebekah Goddard, said: “We are beyond thrilled that we made our £1,000 target, with just over £500 going to each of the charities and we could not have done it without everyone’s help and support – in particular, the wonderful friends we have made over at Ferndown First School, who all rallied around Eric to raise a huge chunk of money.
“Eric has turned into a bit of a rock star at the school and gets a lot of attention over there now, but quite honestly, they have been amazing and we wish to publicly thank them for all their support.”
Deputy manager, Sarah Diffey, added: “We are so happy with the money raised and couldn’t be prouder of our amazing community here at Kings Park as well as all the friends and families who helped us to reach our goal.
“We know that so many will benefit from this and Eric is thrilled. Thank you everyone.”
