Lockyer’s Middle School held its very own bake-off challenge, modelled on the popular TV programme.
The event was launched by cookery teacher, Mrs Shivas and pupils were invited to bake a cake of their choice, linking the design and theme of their cake to a celebration of their choosing.
Sixty pupils entered, together creating a stunning array of cakes, but after much deliberation eight finalists were selected. These pupils had six hours to recreate their masterpiece in the Great Lockyer’s Bake Off final.
There was the usual tension as mishaps and adjustments were made under time pressure!
The finished cakes were outstanding. Cake designs ranged between Easter, wedding, baby gender reveals, bonfire night celebrations and much more.
The intricate decorating designs would have challenged any professional baker and all of the finalists were outstanding and a real credit to themselves and the school.
The judges Miss Dufek (headteacher), Mr Ayling (headteacher of St Michael’s Middle School, Mr Wilson (site manager) and Mrs Heckford (a representative of Friends of Lockyer’s) had an extremely tough job sampling each cake and discussing the celebration story behind the cake before deliberating and announcing their final decision to a crowd of supporting parents and family.
Congratulations go to Flo in Year 7, who was the winning baker with her bonfire-inspired chocolate cake. This was closely followed by Charlotte in Year 8, with her multi-skilled cake-pop and meringue cake.
A huge thank-you was extended to the sponsors: Friends of Lockyer’s – who donated Hobbycraft vouchers – and Durable UK who funded the aprons, chopping boards and boxes of cooking goodies for the winners.
The Great Lockyer’s Bake Off will be eagerly anticipated next year!
