Dorset man climbed height of Mount Everest for climate charity

A DORSET man climbed the equivalent height of Mount Everest to raise money and awareness for a climate change charity.

Chris Horan, from Corfe Mullen, went to great heights repeatedly and consecutively over the course of 140 days to reach the 8,849m (29,032ft) target.

He aimed to climb at least 50m a day and eventually finished the challenge last Thursday (July 11), raising £2,075 for Friends of the Earth Charitable Trust.

Chris said that the main difficulty of the challenge was finding the time to complete a climb each day, as he had to balance his full time work commitments as well as looking after his two children.

He ended the challenge with “quite sore elbows” which meant he could only sleep in a certain way.

Chris originally set himself the challenge to climb 1.48km (one mile) to represent the 1.48°C hotter the world was in 2023 compared to pre-industrial levels.

Chris said that money raised from the challenge would support Friends of the Earth.

He said: “They have spent over 40 years protecting the planet. They need our help as they rely on public support to continue their work.

“They have won new laws to protect our water, wildlife, landscapes, climate and health. But to face the challenges ahead, there needs to be a more positive relationship between people and the environment.”

Chris climbed in a variety of locations inside and outside – including Swanage,  Portland, Ireland , Llanberis pass North Wales,  Wye Valley, Cornwall, the midlands, as well as inside in Poole, Southampton,  Worcester, Frome, and London.

His last climb was in Portland in Dorset.

The GoFundMe is still active if people wish to donate.
