Aldi could be coming to Canford Bottom

CANFORD Bottom residents could soon benefit from a new discount supermarket after plans to build an Aldi were officially submitted.

The proposed Aldi would sit on the site currently occupied by Ellford Accident & Repair Centre, with plans to demolish two buildings to make way for the supermarket.

The outline plans were submitted to Dorset Council by Avison Young on behalf of Aldi.

The planning document states the new supermarket would create between 40 and 50 new jobs.

An Aldi spokesperson said: “A new store will improve access to high quality, affordable food – helping to tackle the rising cost of living, while reducing the need to travel to supermarkets further afield.

“We are aware that there is a lack of discount supermarket options for residents in Colehill and the surrounding area.

“The emerging plans would provide an attractive, modern food store in an accessible location, improving customer choice and enhancing customer experience.”

During the pre-application consultation, concerns were raised over the potential impact on traffic due to the site’s location to the busy Canford Bottom roundabout and the A31.

Responding to these concerns, the planning documents said: “The design will need to demonstrate careful consideration when locating safe site access to ensure it doesn’t exacerbate the congestion issues reported on the nearby roundabout.”

Proposed site access will come in from Canford Bottom road to the west, with a buffer space of planting remaining between the new junction and the residential property sat along the road.

The proposed junction will require the road to be widened and a new, safe toucan crossing to be implemented just north of the junction.

The scheme will provide a total of 120 car park spaces, including six accessible spaces for disabled people only and seven parent and child spaces, both located near to the storefront.

Four active electric vehicle charging points will be provided towards the east of site, with the provision made for an additional 20 spaces to lead on from these in the future.

The proposal will also result in the construction of a new two-way access and pedestrian entrance to the south west boundary.

I think having an aldi in colehill is such a brilliant idea. I don’t drive and am limited to where I can go to do my food shop. Really hope it does happen.

Be very beneficial to the area especially as getting to any other supermarket is agg as I have to travel which hurts my back as I’m diabled so being closer would be better as the cats don’t like to be left for long but they don’t like the food at aldi but they will have to make do and I’m sure I can get some prawns.

Aldi is a good supermarket. Unfortunately, I feel this is the wrong site as it will add to the problems, accidents and congestion of the Canford Bottom roundabout.

Right supermarket, totally wrong location. Anyone living in Colehill will tell you that traffic is a nightmare and Canford Bottom is a place of numerous accidents causing back-ups through Colehuill, Wimborne, Ferndown and Parley. It is a ridiculous place for a supermarket which will attract shoppers from all areas, this will not be just a “local” store. Colehill residents have had enough and local views must account for something. At the open day at Stapehill the overwhelming opinion expressed was against this site being used for a supermarket, not against Aldi.

Like Aldi store but totally wrong site to build a new store. There are enough traffic problems at Canford Bottom, at times a nightmare. Is an Aldi store really needed or is this just in opposition to Lidl at Parley Cross???

Need to find another location…traffic turning right out of entrance will cause a bag log of traffic towards already congested roundabout …and will have a detrimental effect on a great convenience store OneStop .

Brilliant can’t wait as for people moaning about it I’m sure they will go there and shop if they build a slip road into and out I’m pretty sure the traffic will be ok I live next to the roundabout and use it daily I see people not using it properly that’s what causes the issue I am all for the new supermarket can not wait.
