Come and have a go at this target sport that can be played by (almost) anyone, with tactics similar to curling, (wasn’t it a great Olympic final?), writes ladies captain Sue Aplin.
Get out in the fresh air and have some gentle exercise with friendly company. And if you are a competitive sort, we also play competitions and against other clubs in leagues with varying levels of expertise.
Because we can play evenings and weekends, you don’t have to be retired to play.
And we could especially do with more ladies as the annual Ladies v Men match is a hotly contested, even if a lighthearted competition. A great way of getting exercise without getting hot and sweaty.
Come and have a go at one of our open days on Sunday, April 24, or Friday, April 29, pick a time between 10am and 4pm. We will provide equipment and refreshments, all we ask is that you wear flat shoes.
We also have an open day on Sunday, May 1 for younger people (from age seven) to have a go, between noon and 4pm.
If you like it but are still not sure, we offer a further three ‘Try Bowls’ sessions for £15 then if you decide to join us, that is deducted from your membership.
If you can’t make one of the open days, contact us to arrange to try bowls anyway with the same offer.
We have one of the best bowls greens in East Dorset, at King George V playing fields off Church Road, maintained for us by expert groundsmen so that, unlike some clubs, we do not have to maintain the green or clubhouse.
We play seven days a week for six summer months, from early April to mid/late September – from 9.30am, (depending on the day to allow for green maintenance), and up to 8.45pm depending on the time of dusk – and if we can still see the ‘jack’.
We also have various social events during the year.
