AARTISTS, musicians, performers, filmmakers, schools and community groups came together to launch Wimborne as Dorset’s Town of Culture 2026.
Teenage musicians shared the stage with an established songwriter, while student artwork was displayed alongside pieces by professional sculptors and resident artists from Walford Mill Studios.
The result was a vibrant showcase of creative talent across all ages and abilities.
Presented by Wimborne Minster Town Council and supported by Wimborne BID, Allendale House was transformed into a trail of painting, sculpture, film, sound and storytelling celebrating the town, its heritage and its people.
Highlights included a 1/1000th scale model of Wimborne, handmade puppets from Wimborne Community Theatre’s productions Timeless Stream and Secrets of the Stour, and a cinematic installation by illustrator and director Nic Rawling of the award-winning Paper Cinema.

Puppets, performances and paintings from local creatives were included in the launch.
Artwork from Witchampton First School and Beaucroft College added even more colour and energy.
An immersive River Allen soundscape brought local memories to life. Live performances from songwriter Pete Ferret and Dorset teen quartet Kolumbia captivated guests.
Millstream Theatre’s neurodivergent and learning-disabled performers delighted the audience with sketches and songs.
Mayor of Wimborne Jeff Hart officially opened the event alongside Town Crier Chris Brown (pictured above) and members of Wimborne Militia.
Wimborne BID manager and Town of Culture steering group member Tammy Sleet said: “Wimborne BID is delighted to support Town of Culture and the launch was a really exciting taste of just some of the great activities on offer this year.”
Micro-commissions of up to £1,000 are available for creative projects in 2026, along with free brand kits for anyone linking activities to the Town of Culture programme.
Cllr Hart added: “What a magnificent occasion – atmospheric, exciting, wonderful. The entertainment and food were excellent, the house looked superb and the buzz throughout the evening reflected the excellence we expect in our Year of Culture. This was a true collaborative effort and an event to remember.”
