WIMBORNE is set to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) with a wreath-laying ceremony.
On August 15, 1945, following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet declaration of war, Japan announced its surrender—effectively ending the Second World War.
In 2025, the UK is marking the 80th anniversary with national and local commemorations, led by the Royal British Legion and government partners, including a national ceremony at the National Memorial Arboretum.
Town mayor, councillor Jeff Hart, along with local dignitaries and veterans, will gather at the War Memorial on Minster Green at 12pm on August 15 to lay wreaths to mark the occasion.

The event will begin with a solemn reflection, during which wreaths will be laid at the foot of the historic Grade II listed war memorial, honouring local service personnel from both world wars.
Cllr Hart said: “This landmark anniversary serves as a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who served in the Far East campaigns. We are honoured to pay tribute to their memory here in our town, 80 years on.”
Following the wreath-laying, attendees are invited to join for refreshments at the Royal British Legion branch in Wimborne Minster, providing an opportunity for community members, veterans, and representatives to come together in respectful commemoration.
