WIMBORNE Minster’s community came together on Thursday (May 8) to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE80).
People gathered on the Minster Green where they were treated to a performance by Scaplen’s Community Players and the much-loved wartime harmony duo, The Land Girls, whose nostalgic repertoire brought the spirit of the 1940s to life.
At 5pm, the bells of the Minster Church rang out in a symbolic call for peace, followed by a solemn service of remembrance and a wreath-laying ceremony at the town’s war memorial.
A spokesperson for Wimborne Town Council said: “As dusk approached, the Quarterjacks marching band led a well-attended procession from Minster Green to Wimborne Cemetery.

“There, the Commonwealth War Graves were respectfully illuminated, setting a poignant backdrop for the evening’s final event.
“A formal proclamation was delivered by the town serjant and crier, Chris Brown, followed by the lighting of a commemorative beacon by members of The Wimborne Militia—a powerful symbol of hope and resilience.”

The evening culminated in a stirring cannon salute, paying tribute to those who served and sacrificed.
The event drew strong support from the community and was attended by town mayor councillor Jeff Hart and mayoress Barbara Hart.
Also present were Vikki Slade MP (North Poole & East Dorset, Lib Dems), police and crime commissioner David Sidwick, and deputy lieutenant of Dorset, Victoria McConaugh DL.
Wimborne Minster Town Council thanked the public, whose turnout and support “made the day truly memorable”.
