WIMBORNE is set to see a new 20mph limit installed at two roads through the town.
This comes after town and parish councils applied to Dorset Council to lower speed limits in areas they think are of concern, following the introduction of the council’s 20mph limits and zones policy in 2022.
A key caveat for the introduction of the new speed limits is that council’s must be able to demonstrate significant community support before they apply.
By mid to late September, new 20mph signs will be installed at Child Okeford and Winterborne Kingston.
Then in late September to October, Cheselbourne, Okeford Fitzpaine and Wimborne (Allenview Road/Burts Hill) will see new 20mph signs.
Councillor Jon Andrews, cabinet member for place services, said: “The policy has provided officers with a framework for dealing with community-led requests.

“We offer advice and support to local towns and parishes seeking to improve and promote road safety, whether through 20mph limits and zones or other approaches.
“These schemes are the result of a thorough process that begins with community interest. Each application is carefully assessed against clear criteria to ensure that a 20mph scheme will give the maximum benefit for the affected communities.
“This initiative is a direct response to residents’ concerns about safety and wellbeing in their neighbourhoods.
“It aims to deliver the greatest benefit in areas where people live, walk, cycle or use mobility aids, helping to create healthier, safer streets for everyone.”
11 more towns and villages could also see new 20mph speed limits installed.
These include Winterborne Whitechurch, Beaminster, Yetminster & Ryme Intrinseca, Sandy Lane and Victory Oak (St Leonards), Gillingham, Briantspuddle, Upton (including a section in the BCP Council area), Pymore (Bridport), Lyme Regis and Milborne St Andrew.
Details on how to take part in the consultations which will take place in October will be shared on the Dorset Council website in coming weeks.

Residents interested in the introduction of new 20mph speed limits in their local area should contact their town or parish council or their local Dorset councillor.

Excellent news!! Especially for Allenview Road in Wimborne, which has become a Rat Run for the new residents. The sooner the better.
