Upton man jailed for strangling woman and pushing her down stairs

A MAN has been jailed for 26 months after he carried out an attack on a woman which saw her thrown down a set of stairs.

41-year-old Darryl John Cornish attacked the woman at an address in Upton on August 29, 2024.

During the attack, Cornish reportedly strangled the woman, threw her to the ground, pushed her down the stairs, and threw her belongings.

The victim fled the address having sustained injuries to her arms, hands, back and neck.

Officers launched an investigation into the incident, carrying out door-to-door enquiries, taking numerous statements and reviewing mobile phone footage.

Following enquiries, Cornish was subsequently charged in relation to the incident.

He was jailed for 26 months at Bournemouth Crown Court on Tuesday, April 1 for charges of non-fatal strangulation and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

PC Harry Chaplin, of Dorset Police, said: “Domestic abuse is a top priority for the force and we are fully committed to supporting victims and ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice.

“Darryl Cornish subjected his victim to a sustained and violent assault, which has had a lasting impact on her mental and physical wellbeing. I am pleased that he is now behind bars and facing the consequences for his actions

“I also want to praise the victim for the courage she has shown in supporting our investigation. I hope her bravery will help to give other victims the strength to come forward and report domestic abuse to us, in the knowledge that we will fully investigate the matter and hold offenders to account.”
