Upton Horticultural and Craft Show 2024 hailed as “most successful yet”

HUNDREDS of people packed into the Upton Community Centre in August for the Upton Horticultural and Craft Show.

The event has been described as “the most successful yet” with 130 individuals entering more than 400 exhibits.

Patrick Twell was the Overall Show Champion, walking away with the solid silver, 80-year-old Lytchett Minster Area Bowl, originally donated by the Llewellin family who lived at what is now Upton Country Park.

Dawn Teggin was awarded the Best First Time Entrant, with a cup and garden vouchers to show for it, while “boy wonder” Ted McGlade walked away with three trophies.

Cllr Ray Griffin, mayor and chair of Lytchett Minster and Upton Town Council said: “The afternoon, open to the public, saw hundreds of people pack into the Upton Community Centre.

“As a consequence, the presentations of the 40 trophies took place in the adjoining St Dunstan’s Church.

“The mayor welcomed the newly elected MP, Vikki Slade, who presented the prizes. She spoke enthusiastically about the quality of the exhibits, as well as being very complimentary about the appearance of the town, with special reference to the unique avenues of sponsored trees.”

Cllr Griffin added: “Special mention must be made of the very talented 81-year-old Heather Wyatt, and 93-year-old Irene Ellis, both residents at Upton Manor Care Home, whose cross-stitch map of Dorset and pencil portrait of an elderly gentleman, respectively, left other exhibitors and visitors in awe and wonder at their skills.

“At the other end of the scale, in a nod to Taylor Swiftian trends, new classes such as Friendship Bracelets were added.

“A final note of thanks goes to AFC Bournemouth whose signed, auctioned artefacts added handsomely to Upton In Bloom coffers.”
