A PLANNED closure of elderly friendship clubs across Dorset would result in members missing out on vital social interactions, a volunteer has said.
BrendonCare runs several friendship and activity groups in Wimborne, Bournemouth, Bear Cross, Ferndown, West Moors, Ringwood, Blandford Forum and Lymington – as well as many clubs further east.
These clubs have been described as a lifeline to their members as they provide companionship and activities that help combat loneliness and isolation.
However, the popular groups are facing an uncertain future as BrendonCare announced it will reduce the number of community clubs they are able to provide in Dorset and Hampshire.
The charity said the decision comes as it looks to ensure its long-term financial stability but has not gone into detail on what clubs could be closed or when.
Ferndown benefits from four of these clubs at The Barrington Centre– a film club, seated exercise, a quiz club, and a kurling club.

Sarah Elliot, who has volunteered for eight years at the clubs in Ferndown, said closing these clubs would result in a profound impact on many individuals who rely on them for social interaction, mental stimulation, and emotional support.
“I’ve had the privilege of seeing first hand the incredibly positive effect our clubs have on our members,” she said.
“Our clubs provide a warm, welcoming space where people come together, build friendships, and support one another.
“The potential closure of our clubs would absolutely mean that many members could miss out on vital social interactions.
“For many, our clubs are not just a place to meet – they’re a lifeline.
“They offer companionship, encouragement, and opportunities to engage in activities that improve mental and emotional well-being.
“Without it, I worry that members may feel isolated and lose a crucial source of connection and support.”
‘Actively looking for groups to take on running of clubs’
BrendonCare has had a presence in Ferndown since 2008.
Your New Stour & Avon contacted BrendonCare for details on when a decision could be made, but the charity did not confirm a date.
It said it is actively engaging with groups and organisations that could take on the running of these vital clubs.
“We have been open with our volunteers and members who were all notified individually about the proposal,” Michael Crutchley, chief executive of BrendonCare said.
“They will continue to receive our full support whilst we hold discussions with potential local organisations.
“Once discussions have concluded, volunteers and members will be updated. For now, our clubs will continue as normal.”
The charity said it is keen to hear from organisations that could take on the running of these clubs.
Groups should contact the charity by calling 01962 852133 or email clubs@brendoncare.org.uk.
I have health issues so joined Brendon Care club at Ferndown over two years ago it has made a great different to my life, closing it down would be a big sadness and will affect my life considerably, it’s now part of my life, Please Brendon Care DON’T CLOSE THIS CLUB DOWN.
My husband and I moved to West Moors just under 3 years ago.
Shortly after we were lucky enough to find Brendoncare and quickly made lots of lovely friends.
We then became volunteers and run the movie club and Kurling club.
It’s going to affect so many peoples life’s as for many of our members it’s a lifeline to chat and break up their days.
We are all desperate for the clubs to be saved.
Sarah Elliot and her family have given many years supporting the clubs and going way beyond what they need to do to make everyone feel welcome and part “family”.
I joined Brendoncare two years ago after my husband passed away. I was agoraphobic and was petrified about leaving the house plus meeting new people. I can honestly say they were a lifeline for me. All the groups make you feel so welcome and everyone is very friendly. I have made lots of new friends. Please don’t close our clubs Brendoncare.
