Don’t let your body get in your way

When you try a new experience, it can be daunting not knowing what to expect. I’m often asked what to expect when coming for a massage. It’s important to remember that not all therapists work the same so ask questions to help put your mind at ease.
I’m usually asked what to expect, what to wear, will I be covered up, am I too big for a massage, too hairy, what about my scars? You don’t need to worry about any of those things.
During your consultation, I’ll give you an overview of the areas I’ll need to work on and check that you’re okay with that. If you have any concerns or areas you prefer not to be touched, then we can work around this.
I’ll always leave the room while you undress and re-dress, I will explain what you need to take off, where and how you need to lay and which sheet to be under. If you’re not sure on something, please just ask – I want you to feel comfortable and safe.
Depending on what area of the body you’re having treated, your pants/ boxers will stay on. If we’re doing glute work (that’s your buttocks) I’ll always check before touching that area. A lot of glute massage can be carried out over the top of the sheet so I won’t necessarily be touching your bare bottom. This is also why I don’t advise wearing your best undies as they may come into contact with massage wax or oil.
Your bra will usually come off for treatment but you’ll remain covered throughout. If you’re concerned about being bra-less I’m always happy to place an additional modesty towel for comfort.
Throughout the treatment I will always be checking in with you to see how you feel and how it may feel where I’m working. It’s important that you’re happy and give consent for me working on and touching your body. If you need to pause or you need a sip of water, that’s okay too.
As for being hairy or worrying about shaving – forget it! I’ve also been a beauty therapist, so I’ve seen it all! Perhaps don’t come straight from the hairdressers – I’m more than likely to mess up your hairdo or get a little oil in there.
If you have scars, we can work on releasing some of that scar tissue and tension if you wish or leave them well alone if you prefer. Scar work can be amazing but can also bring a lot of emotion with it too, so it’s something you need to be ready for.
There’s no need to worry about wobbly bits, being too old, big or skinny for massage. People come in all shapes and sizes. What matters is that you’re comfortable. When you come for a massage you’re there for a reason, whether that’s for pain management or just to relax. That’s what I’m there to focus on. If there’s anything I can do to reassure you or make you feel more comfortable, then I will. So what’s stopping you from booking a massage?
