Dacombes of Wimborne is a double award winner in industry Oscars

WIMBORNE’S longest-running independent home electronics store, Dacombes of Wimborne, has scooped not one but two top honours.

The family-run business, with over 100 years of heritage in the town, was crowned Best Sustainable Independent Electrical Retailer for the second consecutive year and applauded for its bold eco strategy and commitment to energy efficiency.

The awards were part of the prestigious ERT Awards — widely regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the UK’s electrical retail industry.

Judges praised Dacombes of Wimborne for its impressive transition to solar power, with 99 solar panels now installed on the showroom roof in Leigh Road.

During working hours, the business is fully self-sufficient in energy, powering hundreds of domestic appliances, televisions, and state-of-the-art home cinemas.

The company has also invested in EV van chargers, a Tesla battery and uses a heat pump system for heating and cooling, alongside energy-efficient lighting and equipment throughout. It has also introduced an in-store digital price tag system, doing away with the need for ink and paper.

In a second triumph, Dacombes was named Best Independent Consumer Electronics Retailer in the Small Business category — a testament to its customer-first ethos and resilience in a sector dominated by national chains.

Managing director Matt Renaut said: “These two awards are like receiving two huge, big ticks for what we really care about as a business. As an independent, customer service and highly trained staff has always been at our core.

Alongside this proud recognition is our eco strategy and commitment to moving Dacombes forward for another 100 years in the most sustainable way possible.”

The accolades didn’t stop there. Dacombes of Wimborne also received a Highly Commended nod in the Best Independent Kitchen Retailer Showroom category, thanks to its collaboration with fellow Wimborne business MK Interiors.

Judges were impressed by the fully working in-store kitchens, which not only showcase design excellence but are also offered free of charge to local community groups for cookery classes and events.
